Julia & James's "A Little Love Bug" Baby Shower at The Duke Mansion | Charlotte Baby Shower & Maternity Photographer

There's a particular kind of afternoon that you don't realize you'll want back until it's already over. The last stretch before a baby arrives is full of them — the belly you keep resting your hand on without thinking about it, your mom fussing over the dessert table, your husband's hand finding the small of your back while somebody's telling a story across the room. Julia and James's baby shower at The Duke Mansion was one long afternoon of exactly that, and I'm so glad we have it on film.

We paired their shower with a maternity session through the mansion's gardens the same day, which turned out to be one of my favorite ways to document this season of life — the celebration and the quiet, just the two of them, all in one place.

A "Little Love Bug" Baby Shower in the Duke Mansion Solarium

Julia and James's shower filled the Duke Endowment Solarium, the glass-enclosed room at the back of the mansion with black-and-white marble floors and French doors that open straight into the living room. It is, genuinely, one of the prettiest rooms in Charlotte to photograph in. Light pours through those tall windows all afternoon, bounces off the marble, and does most of my job for me.

Round tables in soft blush linens, gold chiavari chairs, and low garden-style arrangements on every table. Guests drifted between the solarium, the living room, and the terrace all afternoon.

The Details: Ladybugs, Butterflies, and a Garden-Picked Palette

The theme was "A Little Love Bug Is On The Way," and it was carried through beautifully without ever tipping into cute-for-the-sake-of-cute.

A tall arched sign in the solarium read A Little Love Bug Is On The Way, framed by a balloon installation in cream, ivory, and soft nude, with monarch butterflies perched across it and ladybugs tucked low in the clusters. A mirrored welcome sign greeted guests in the entry hall beside an oversized woven vase of trailing greenery.

The florals were the thing I keep coming back to. Instead of the expected all-pastel baby shower palette, Julia went with true red alongside coral, bubblegum pink, and cream — garden roses, dahlias, ranunculus, and gerberas with greenery left long and loose, the way it grows. Little ladybug figures hid in the arrangements and beside the lamps, so guests kept finding them all afternoon. Against the mansion's cream walls and that checkered marble, the red read as elegant rather than loud.

Julia wore a tiered pink floral maxi dress; James wore a navy blazer with white trousers. Some of my favorite frames of the day are the ones at the balloon backdrop — Julia with her parents, then with her girlfriends, everyone's hands landing on her belly at once.

Why The Duke Mansion Is a Perfect Charlotte Baby Shower Venue

If you're searching for a Charlotte baby shower venue with real character, The Duke Mansion is hard to beat. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and set on four and a half acres in Myers Park, it gives you a few things that matter enormously for photographs:

  • Natural light everywhere. The solarium and living room are wrapped in tall windows, so you're not fighting dim banquet-room lighting.

  • The architecture does the decorating. Marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and millwork mean you need far less decor to make a room feel finished.

  • Indoor and outdoor in one property. The Mary D.B.T. Semans Gardens are right outside the door, which makes pairing a shower with a maternity session effortless.

  • Rooms that scale. The solarium and living room suit an intimate shower; the dining room and terraces open it up when the guest list grows.

  • It's genuinely Charlotte. For families with roots here, the mansion carries a sense of history that a blank event space never will.

Julia & James's Duke Mansion Maternity Session

Before guests arrived, Julia and James and I spent time in the gardens and in the quiet of the empty solarium.

Julia's first look was an ivory ruffled set that caught the light beautifully as she moved — we photographed it against the boxwood parterres, under the ivy arch, along the brick walkways, and framed in the mansion's French doors with the marble floor underfoot. For a second look she changed into a simple white top and relaxed wide-leg denim, which brought a lightness to the back half of the session: James spinning her on the lawn, the two of them laughing on the garden path, her head tipped back into the sun.

We also did a handful of close, quiet frames — her hands and his resting together on her belly, foreheads touching in the doorway. I converted several to black and white, because some moments don't need color to carry them.

These are the photographs they'll want in ten years. Not because the florals were beautiful, though they were, but because this is the last stretch of just the two of them, and that is a season you can't go back and photograph later.

Planning a Baby Shower or Maternity Session at The Duke Mansion

A few things I've learned about photographing showers and maternity sessions at this venue:

  • Build in time before guests arrive. Thirty to forty-five minutes in the gardens beforehand gets you a full maternity session without anyone waiting on you.

  • Let the details be photographed early. I shoot the tablescapes, florals, signage, and dessert table before the room fills, so the design is documented exactly as the designer intended.

  • Plan for warm months. The gardens are at their fullest from late spring through early fall; just allow a few minutes indoors to cool off between looks.

  • Bring a second outfit. One elevated, one relaxed. It doubles the range of the gallery for almost no extra time.

  • Don't skip family portraits at the backdrop. Grandparents-to-be and lifelong friends in one frame — those become the images that matter most later.
